A Cape Town exchange memory shaped by Ubuntu, community-based healthcare, rural health learning, and the joint TUFH and WONCA gathering in South Africa.
SNO Exchange 2024 carried the spirit of Ubuntu into a student journey of community health, cultural learning, and international collaboration.
Sara Idris joined the 2024 exchange as a student voice within a wider movement for people, place, and policy in community wellness.
The exchange connected with Ubuntu 2024 in Cape Town, a joint gathering between The Network: TUFH and Rural WONCA with university and government partners across South Africa.
The experience brought together Cape Town exploration, community health exposure, supervised learning, and relationships with peers and health educators from different parts of the world.
The 2024 story is memorable because it placed student leadership inside a deeply human setting: learning from place, listening across cultures, and carrying Ubuntu forward as practice.

Every SNO Exchange story begins with opportunity, and opportunity depends on support. These exchanges can only happen when enough donations and scholarship resources are available to help fund student participation, travel, learning, and global collaboration.
The SNO Exchange 2024 was more than a program – it was a journey into the heart of community-based healthcare, guided by mentors, shaped by Cape Town, and shared with a global family of future healers.

During the exchange, the winner experienced the vibrant culture, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes of Cape Town – an immersive window into South African life.
In addition, there was a deep dive into community health systems across four co-hosting universities, including visits to clinics, community health centres, and public health projects.
Moreover, Sara was paired with a dedicated academic supervisor, gaining hands-on experience in research design, data collection, and critical reflection on health systems.
The journey culminated at the UBUNTU 2024 conference – a joint event between The Network: TUFH and Rural WONCA, celebrating TUFH’s 45th anniversary and global rural health.
Throughout the two weeks, Sara met healthcare educators, students, and policymakers from around the world, building relationships that extend far beyond the program itself.
Finally, every day blended academic learning with cultural exchange – seminars, workshops, community visits, and shared moments that shaped a new perspective on global health.
